Just Try Not To Cry Watching This 10-Year-Old Asking His Stepdad To Adopt Him

“Do you love me? Do you love mom? Can you live without us?”

Ten-year-old Kalani Watson just couldn’t wait until Father’s Day to give his stepdad the most special gift. So instead, he carved a moment out of his own birthday party to “propose” to his mom’s husband, asking the man to adopt him. I’m not crying, you’re crying.

Kalani has known Brandon Williamson since he started dating Kalani’s mom, Porsche Williamson, in 2010. She filmed the video at Kalani’s birthday party that shows him reading a heartfelt, handwritten note to Brandon.

“Dad, I know today is supposed to be all about me, but today is really about us,” Kalani reads. “‘Brandon’ is what I met you as seven years ago. I’m so glad that has changed to ‘Dad.’”

He continues, “I’ve learned so much from you. I asked mom the difference between a stepdad and a real dad, because I don’t get it sometimes. You have been here for everything: all my school programs and parent conferences, all my sports, every time I’m sick, when I act up — you take me everywhere.”

Kalani goes on to detail some of his favorite memories with Brandon, and then makes his touching proposal. He asks Brandon, “Do you love me? Do you love mom? Can you live without us?”

Brandon, already tearing up, shakes his head no while he opens a present Kalani had handed him earlier.

“So let’s stop playing and make it official,” Kalani says. “Brandon Craig Williamson, will you do me the biggest favor in the world? Will you adopt me?”

Brandon isn’t the only one sobbing — just try to keep your eyes dry while you watch the video.

It’s been viewed more than 3 million times since it was posted on Sunday, and Kalani’s mom Porsche told the Huffington Post that they started planning the adoption proposal more than two months before it happened. She said Kalani originally planned to ask on Father’s Day, but that as soon as they had the paperwork ready, he just couldn’t wait that long.

“We all just cried,” she said of the family’s response to the touching moment caught on the video. “I knew this was going to break [Brandon] down. Like the time my son asked if he could call him dad he was four. He has so much love for Brandon and he was so nervous once the day was here. He kept going over it the day before.”

Brandon told the site that he’s considered himself Kalani’s “official” dad for years, but hearing it from Kalani made all the difference.

“I was thinking, ‘I earned this,’” he said. “Most parents automatically get their child’s love. I had to grind for this, I had to show him I’m not going anywhere. So since I have had to work hard for his love I don’t take it for granted. So it was a honor and one of the greatest moments of my life.”

The family said they didn’t expect the video to get so much attention, but they’re glad it did.

“It’s humbling, because I feel as though it’s putting a positive light on black fathers and families,” Brandon explained. “Black fatherhood is everything! To know that I’m raising a young prince into being a king is a[n] awesome feeling.”
